Harbor View Park, Yokohama

Harbor View Park, Yokohama

Harbor View Hill Park stands as a public green space atop the Bluff, in Naka-ku, offering scenic vistas of the Port of Yokohama. Its history intertwines with the city's maritime past. Following the opening of the Port of Yokohama to foreign trade in 1859, this site housed the British Consul’s Residence. From 1862 to 1875, it also accommodated part of the British military garrison.

The original Consul’s Residence, reconstructed in 1937, continued to be utilized as Crown Property until 1969. Subsequently, the edifice and its surrounding gardens were relinquished to the City of Yokohama, transforming into the sprawling 72-hectare Harbor View Hill Park. The park's moniker derives from a renowned song penned by Tatsumi Azuma, a Kobe resident, thus also associating it with that port city.

Within Harbor View Park, visitors can explore various attractions including a charming rose garden, a grand fountain, notable landmarks such as the British House and 111 Yamate House, cultural venues like the Osaragi Jiro Memorial Hall, as well as the KKR Porthill Yokohama Hotel, the Yokohama Meteorological Observatory, and the Kanagawa Museum of Modern Literature.

Adjacent to Yokohama Harbor View Park lies the main campus of Yokohama International School. Moreover, the historic Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery is nearby, contributing to the area's status as one of Yokohama's premier tourist spots.
