Harry P. Leu Gardens, Orlando

Harry P. Leu Gardens, Orlando

The Harry P. Leu Gardens, situated in Orlando, cover nearly 50 acres of land featuring a blend of semi-tropical and tropical plant life. Visitors can explore landscaped gardens, lakes, and nature trails under the shade of ancient oaks and camellia forests. The gardens are accessible to the public.

Part of the gardens, about 15 acres, is designated as a historic district since December 29, 1994. This area includes the Mizell-Leu House Historic District, also known as the Leu Botanical Gardens and Leu House Museum, which comprises three historic buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The Leu Gardens originated from the efforts of Mr. and Mrs. Harry P. Leu. In 1936, they bought the Leu House and 40 acres of land. Their global travels enabled them to collect a wide variety of exotic plants and camellias, totaling over 240 varieties. In 1961, they donated the property to the city of Orlando. Mr. Leu passed away in 1977.

A significant feature of the gardens is the Leu House Museum, formerly the home of Harry and Mary Jane Leu. It has been restored and is listed on the National Historical Register. Guided tours showcase life in Florida at the turn of the century.

Located in the USDA climate zone 9b, the Leu Gardens support a diverse range of plants due to the mild subtropical climate. The gardens boast extensive collections of various plant species including aroids, azaleas, bamboo, and many more.
