Hartebrugkerk (Hartebrug Church), Leiden

The Hartebrug Church, officially known as Our Lady Immaculate Conception, is a Catholic church located in Leiden. Part of the Parish of Saints Peter and Paul, the church is colloquially called the Coeliekerk by locals, derived from the Latin phrase above its entrance: “This is the house of God and the gate to heaven” (Hic Domus Dei est et Porta Coeli). Its name also reflects its historical proximity to the Hartebrug Bridge, which once stood nearby.

During the Reformation, Catholics in the Netherlands were restricted to worship in clandestine churches. After the establishment of religious freedom in the early 19th century, the need for a dedicated Catholic church in Leiden arose. The Hartebrug Church was constructed in 1836 under the design of architect Theo Molkenboer. In 1892, a new tower was added to the structure, designed by architect Leo van der Laan.

The Hartebrug Church is an exemplary water state church built in the neoclassical style. Its exterior features Ionic columns and a tympanum (pediment) adorned with an image of the all-seeing eye. Below the tympanum, the Latin phrase emphasizing its sacred significance is inscribed. The interior is richly decorated with statues of saints and the four evangelists, as well as reliefs depicting the crucifixion of Jesus.

The church’s musical heritage is highlighted by its impressive organ, constructed in 1877 by M. Maarschalkerweerd to replace an earlier instrument from a hidden church. The organ has undergone multiple restorations over the years. It bears the inscription “Praise the Lord with choral singing and organ playing” (Laudate Dominum in Coro et Organo). Today, the church is known for hosting choir performances, with an emphasis on Gregorian music.
