Amsterdam's historical reliance upon imported narcotics saw its cessation in the latter years of the 1980s, coinciding with the advent of hydroponic cultivation techniques. This groundbreaking approach enabled the cultivation of marijuana, notably the American-bred strain known as "skunk", to thrive without the need for soil, nurtured solely by artificial illumination.
