Heidelberger Marstall, Heidelberg
In 1510, Elector Ludwig V commissioned the construction of the Marstall right by the Neckar River. This historical structure, one of the few remaining medieval buildings in Heidelberg, originally functioned as an armory for weapons and a shelter for horses. Its lengthy front along the Neckar was secured by a watchtower at each end, also serving as a mooring point for river ships.
Today, the Marstall complex has been repurposed to accommodate the excellent Marstallcafé, event spaces, and the administrative offices of the Student Services Organization. The main building is easily recognizable with its red brick facade, distinctive tower, low-set windows, and ample surrounding greenery, creating a picturesque setting in the heart of Heidelberg.
