Herschel Greer Stadium, Nashville
Herschel Greer Stadium stands as a minor league baseball facility situated on the grounds of Fort Negley, a historical American Civil War fort, approximately two miles (around 3 kilometers) to the south of downtown Nashville. This stadium was inaugurated in 1978 and was named in honor of Herschel Lynn Greer, a prominent Nashville entrepreneur who also held the distinction of being the inaugural president of the Nashville Vols minor league baseball franchise. The ballpark serves as the home venue for the Triple-A team, the Nashville Sounds, belonging to the Pacific Coast League (PCL), and boasts a seating capacity of 10,300 spectators.
One of its most recognizable features is the unique guitar-shaped scoreboard, which prominently displays the game's score on the guitar neck. Over the years, Greer Stadium has hosted various noteworthy events, including three minor league all-star games, eight games where no hits were recorded (one of which was a perfect game), and an epic 24-inning game, which equaled the record for the longest game in PCL history. Between 1993 and 1994, the stadium also served as the home field for the Double-A Southern League's Nashville Xpress.
Recently, the Nashville Sounds have been working to build a new stadium to replace the aging Greer Stadium. Greer Stadium was only designed to last 30 years and falls below Triple-A baseball standards. While the Sounds pursue a new ballpark, Greer Stadium has undergone multiple upgrades and repairs to stay operational.
