Herzliya Hebrew High School, Tel Aviv

The Herzliya Hebrew Gymnasium, a notable high school, stands in Tel Aviv. It was the first Hebrew high school in the country, established in 1905 in Jaffa, back when it was under Ottoman rule. In 1909, on July 28, they began constructing a new building for the school on Herzl Street in what would become Tel Aviv. Designed by Joseph Barsky, the building drew inspiration from Solomon's Temple.

This Herzl Street building was a significant landmark in Tel Aviv until 1962. It was then demolished to make way for the Shalom Meir Tower, which at that time was Israel's tallest building and a remarkable architectural feat.

The demolition of the original Hebrew High School building led to a greater awareness of the need to preserve historical sites. As a result, the Council for Conservation of Heritage Sites in Israel was formed in the 1980s, partly due to what happened to the Herzliya Hebrew High School.

Now located on Jabotinsky Street, the school operates as a secondary school for six years. The newer building, constructed to echo the original design with some enhancements, features a gate reminiscent of the 1909 building's facade.
