Heuscheuer (Hay Barn), Heidelberg

Heuscheuer (Hay Barn), Heidelberg

To the east of the Marstall complex rises the Hay Barn, constructed with rubble masonry. Similar to the Marstall, its origins are rooted in city defense. In the Middle Ages, this site was occupied by the Mantle or Women's Tower of the northwestern corner bastion. After the tower's destruction in 1693, a storage building with a Baroque hipped roof was erected. This building stored hay for the Marstall until 1824 and subsequently served as a municipal warehouse. Between 1963 and 1965, the Hay Barn was converted into a lecture hall building for the University, blending its historical significance with modern academic use.
