Historic Cherry Hill House, Albany

The Historic Cherry Hill House, located on South Pearl Street in Albany, is a distinguished timber-frame structure dating back to the late 18th century. Built by Colonel Philip Kiliaen van Rensselaer for his bride, Maria Sanders-granddaughter of Peter Schuyler-the house has a rich history spanning centuries, intertwining political prominence, dramatic events, and architectural significance.

The architectural details include a full-width wooden porch with turned balusters, six-over-six double-hung sash windows with wooden surrounds, and a shed-roofed hood over the main entrance. The house also boasts a two-story projecting section with a flat roof on the north side, adding to its historic character.

One of the first properties in Albany to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, Cherry Hill has played a pivotal role in the city's past. During the early 19th century, it served as the home of Solomon van Rensselaer, a prominent figure who held positions in Congress and local government. Over time, the estate expanded into a manor house overseeing a large farm.

Cherry Hill became notable for its distinguished guests and infamous events. In the 1820s, it provided accommodations for the Marquis de Lafayette on his return visit to the United States. Around the same time, it was the site of a murder that resulted in Albany's last public hanging after a highly controversial trial. The house has since gained a reputation for being haunted, further adding to its mystique.

Remarkably, the van Rensselaer descendants maintained residence in Cherry Hill for nearly two centuries, preserving its original interior finishes along with an extensive collection of furniture, portraits, kitchenware, and family documents. Today, it operates as a historic house museum under the management of the Historic Cherry Hill Association.
