Hochbunker (Air-raid Shelter), Trier
The Hochbunker (Air-raid Shelter) in Trier stands as a striking relic of WWII history, designed to shield local officials and civilians from Allied bombing. Built in 1942 near the town hall on Augustinerhof square, this concrete high-rise bunker reaches 38 meters, with walls over 6 feet thick. The building is a testament to wartime architecture with its rugged concrete exterior and a sharp, unfinished roof intended to deflect bomb impacts to the ground. Despite its defensive design, some planned installations, like the ventilation system, were never completed.
Beside the Hochbunker lies the "Flachbunker," a lower bunker originally connected to the high-rise structure, though only one floor is visible above ground. The entire complex also includes two basement floors that were prepared with provisions for energy, communication, and a water supply. After the war, the demolition of such bunkers proved too costly, so they were often repurposed. Today, the Hochbunker, fenced and overgrown with vegetation, is a protected historical monument, though closed to public entry. This formidable structure remains a captivating piece of WWII architecture, attracting those interested in Trier’s resilient wartime history.
