Hoftoren, Hague
The Hoftoren (Court Tower), also known as De Vulpen (The Fountain Pen), is a prominent skyscraper located in The Hague. This 29-storey building stands at an impressive height of 141.86 meters (465.4 feet), making it the third-tallest in The Hague and the eighth-tallest in the country. It was designed by the renowned Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF) based in New York City and constructed by Heijmans Construction.
The Hoftoren's design, which was selected through an international competition, consists of a single tower accompanied by a low bar building. Both structures are clad in vertical slabs of light sand-colored stone, giving the building a distinct and elegant appearance. This architectural choice has not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal of the Hoftoren but has also made it a central feature of The Hague's urban redevelopment, particularly in the area surrounding the Central Station.
Functionally, the Hoftoren is a multi-purpose building. It houses offices, a conference center, a restaurant, and a ground floor arcade that opens onto a beautiful central courtyard garden. This garden, with its lush greenery, forms a unifying element for the entire complex, creating a tranquil oasis in the midst of the bustling city.
The tower is not just a functional space but also a civic landmark in The Netherlands. Its orientation provides expansive views towards the Malieveld, a central green space in The Hague, and the North Sea. The building's slender, spire-like profile is a striking addition to the city skyline.
