Hoosier Salon, Indianapolis

Hoosier Salon, Indianapolis

The Hoosier Salon is a cornerstone of Indiana's art scene, showcasing the creativity and talent of artists with ties to the state. Established in 1925 by the Daughters of Indiana, a group of Indiana-born women residing in Chicago, the Salon began as an annual juried art exhibition at the prestigious Marshall Field and Company's galleries. It relocated to Indianapolis in 1942, cementing its place as a significant cultural institution in the state.

The annual Hoosier Art Salon Exhibition provides a platform for Indiana artists to display and market their work. Over the decades, it has featured many renowned painters, sculptors, cartoonists, and mixed-media artists, including members of the Hoosier Group and the Brown County Art Colony. To participate, artists must be Indiana residents and members of the Hoosier Salon arts organization.

Beyond its annual exhibition, the Hoosier Salon Patron's Association operates year-round galleries in New Harmony, Indiana, and has previously managed spaces in Wabash and Carmel. These galleries host exhibitions, workshops, and demonstrations, fostering a vibrant community for artists and art enthusiasts alike.

Despite challenges, including wars, economic downturns, a fire, and venue changes, the Hoosier Salon has remained resilient. In 2014, it celebrated 90 years of continuous exhibitions, a testament to its enduring legacy and contribution to Indiana’s cultural heritage. Today, the Hoosier Salon continues to serve as a vital hub for celebrating and supporting Indiana's artistic talent.
