Musee Horta (Horta Museum), Brussels
This museum occupies the two houses that Victor Horta designed as his residence and studio during the late 19th century, and where he lived until 1919. The only Horta-designed house open to the public, it was developed in the late 1960s as part of a dedicated effort to preserve Brussels' architectural heritage and promote the beauty of Art Nouveau.
The building's exterior is captivating, consisting of a pair of narrow, interconnected terraced houses with a fluid and artistically adorned facade. The interior, however, is even more impressive: a sunny and aesthetically pleasing space that showcases Horta's favorite design elements, including wrought ironwork, stained glass, plus intricate furniture and paneling crafted from various types of wood.
A standout interior feature is the staircase, a delicate spiral structure at the heart of the house, illuminated by a large skylight. Adorned with painted motifs and surrounded by mirrors, this staircase ranks among Horta's most magnificent and ingenious creations, providing access to a series of spacious and well-lit rooms. The dining room is particularly memorable, featuring a creative combination of white enamelled brickwork, exposed structural metal arches, and a parquet floor. Adorning its walls are six bas-reliefs carved by Pierre Braecke, five of which represent the arts corresponding to the muses depicted above the dresser: painting, music, sculpture, literature, and architecture. The sixth bas-relief showcases a model of the Aubecq mansion, built by Horta in 1899 and unfortunately demolished in 1950.
In addition to its architectural treasures, the museum also houses a modest yet enjoyable collection of paintings, many of which were gifted to Horta by his friends and colleagues. Visitors can also explore a gift shop on-site.
Why You Should Visit:
Listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, this house serves as a remarkable showcase of Art Nouveau, with artistic details adorning every corner. A decadent confluence of artworks, beautifully restored, exemplifying the style in every intricate detail.
Tips:
Photography is not allowed, so be prepared to store your camera and phone in the lobby lockers.
Consider taking a leisurely stroll through the entire Saint-Gilles neighborhood, as it offers a treasure trove of Art Nouveau architecture to explore.
