Hospital Geral de Santo António, Porto

The Hospital Geral de Santo António is located in the former parish of Miragaia, Porto. While the hospital operates as a modern, well-equipped facility, it is housed in a historically significant building that exemplifies Palladian architecture. Construction began on July 15, 1770, on what was then vacant land on the outskirts of the city. The project was designed by the renowned English architect John Carr (1723–1807), who conceived it in a Neoclassical style. The hospital’s structure features clean, symmetrical lines, marked by a central body resembling a classical temple, flanked by wings that advance and retreat towards corner turrets. Minimalist decoration includes sculptures, urns, and classical architectural details, enhancing its stately appearance.

The hospital officially opened to patients in 1799, admitting 150 women from the D. Lopo Hospital. Over the years, it became a central hub for Porto, serving as the primary facility to handle victims of disasters, epidemics, and political upheavals. In 1974, following the revolution, the hospital came under state management, marking a significant transition in its administration.

In addition to its medical services, the hospital is home to a museum, the Porto Hospital Center Museum (Museu do Centro Hospitalar do Porto), housed in two historic rooms. The museum offers a glimpse into the history of medicine and pharmacology in Portugal, with a notable inventory of over 1,000 cultural and artistic pieces. These items, which belong to the Holy House of Mercy of Porto (Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto), include medical-surgical instruments, laboratory equipment, as well as paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts, further underscoring the hospital’s cultural and historical importance.

Recognized as a National Monument since 1910, the Hospital Geral de Santo António remains one of the most important architectural and medical landmarks in Porto.
