Hôtel de Région (Regional Hotel), Montpellier
The Regional Hotel (Hôtel de Région) in Montpellier is a monumental structure marking the culmination of the Antigone district’s architectural axis. Designed by the renowned architect Ricardo Bofill, this impressive building, standing on the other side of the river Lez, is a striking example of a neo-Classical style combined with modern elements. Constructed primarily from pre-cast concrete and glass, the building’s reflective surface makes it a prominent sight in the cityscape, especially when illuminated by natural light.
The Regional Hotel, resembling the size and grandeur of the Triumphal Arc in Paris, was conceived as the administrative seat of the Languedoc-Roussillon Government and the Regional Parliament. Standing at fifty meters high, it features a distinctive glass-clad triumphal arch design with a central opening, symbolizing both a gateway to the city and an emblem of regional governance. The building’s two massive pillars contain vertical circulation and office spaces, while the bridge element above houses a grand hall laid out on three levels. The Parliament chamber, occupying the central window, offers a panoramic view of the Antigone district and the newly developed areas along the river Lez towards Port Marianne.
The Regional Hotel’s unique design embodies the fusion of classical and contemporary aesthetics, using materials like concrete and glass to create a modern urban gate. The structure not only serves administrative functions with council chambers, meeting rooms, and apartments for government members but also acts as a symbol of Montpellier’s historical continuity and modern ambitions.
Located in front of a large, elegant fountain and rising above a man-made pool, the Regional Hotel is more than just a government building—it is a landmark that defines the urban landscape of Montpellier, representing the region’s identity and its architectural heritage.

Montpellier Introduction Walking Tour
The trouble with living in a pleasant seaside town in the middle ages was pirates. This was especially true for the town of Maguelone on the south shore of present-day France. A settlement more inland was combined with Maguelone under the feudal dynasty of Guilhem in 985. They added a castle and walls and called it Montpellier.
