Humes Middle School, Memphis

Humes Middle School, Memphis

Humes Middle School, located in Memphis and established in 1930, was initially known as L. C. Humes High School. An interesting part of the school's past is its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. This recognition isn't solely due to its contribution to Memphis' educational landscape but also because of its architectural importance. The school's design, a fine representation of Collegiate Gothic architecture, was created by the acclaimed architect George Awsumb, adding an artistic and cultural element to its educational significance.

Arguably the most intriguing part of Humes High School's history is its connection to the iconic Elvis Presley. In an era when completing high school was less common than today, Elvis became the first in his family to achieve this milestone. He attended Humes High School from 1948 to 1953, and it was here that he first tasted success in the entertainment world. During a school talent show, he took the stage, showcasing his musical talents by singing and playing the guitar. This performance marked the start of his journey to fame, and fittingly, Elvis won the talent contest, foreshadowing his future as the "King of Rock and Roll."

Today, when you visit Humes Middle School, you can't help but feel a sense of wonder and nostalgia, especially when standing on the stage where Elvis once performed. This place, steeped in history, serves as a reminder of the school's significant contributions to education and its impact on the cultural fabric of Memphis and the world.
