Hyde Park, Perth

Hyde Park, Perth

Hyde Park, previously called Third Swamp Reserve, is situated in the heart of the city. Before the arrival of European settlers, the local Noongar people referred to this area as Boodjamooling. It was originally part of a chain of wetlands extending from Claisebrook Cove to Herdsman Lake, including Lake Monger, collectively known as the Great Lakes District. However, only a small portion of these wetlands exist today.

Following the establishment of the Swan River Colony in 1829, European settlers named this area Third Swamp. Then, in 1897, Lyall Hall designated 15.5 hectares (38 acres) of Third Swamp as a public park, which was later renamed Hyde Park two years later.

Hyde Park offers various amenities such as public restrooms, playgrounds, barbecue areas, drinking fountains, a pavilion, a stage, fitness equipment, and an approximately 800-meter-long paved walking path encircling the lake. Electricity is provided, mainly utilized for temporary fairground rides during events.

An annual event called the Hyde Park Fair takes place in the park, which is one of Perth's oldest free community gatherings. Initially called the Hyde Park Festival, it commenced in 1968, ceased in 1985, and was revived in 1988 as the Hyde Park Fair, organized by the Rotary Club of North Perth.
