Iglesia de la Matriz (Church of the Matrix), Valparaiso

The Church of La Matriz is regarded as the city's first chapel. Its roots are believed to trace back to 1559, although the present-day structure was erected in 1842. The church exhibits a captivating blend of styles, featuring a basilica design with a fusion of colonial Creole influences, characterized by clay tiles, adobe walls, and classical details.

Situated in the heart of the Puerto neighborhood amidst late 19th-century houses reminiscent of Buenos Aires style, the Church of La Matriz holds a significant place in Valparaíso's cultural and architectural heritage. The immediate surroundings of the church, recognized as a Typical Zone, were deemed a National Monument in 1971. This recognition underscores the historical and cultural importance of the area.
