Iglesia de San Martin de Tours (Church of San Martin of Tours), Salamanca
The Iglesia de San Martin de Tours (Church of San Martin of Tours) is a Spanish Romanesque church. It was built on a hermitage dedicated to San Pedro in the 12th century, specifically in the year 1103 at the initiative of Count Martín Fernández in the Toresanos neighborhood during the repopulation of the city. At that time, in 1173, the church was called "San Martín del Mercado" or "San Martín de la Plaza".
The church currently appears embedded among modern buildings, it has undergone numerous restorations throughout its history. It was declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument (Asset of Cultural Interest) in 1931.
It is one of the examples of Romanesque architecture in the city of Salamanca, along with the old cathedral. The church has a plan with three naves ending in circular apses. Of the three, the most relevant is that it occupies half. The church has neither a dome nor a transept, and one of its main attractions is the choir, which dates from the 16th century and is Elizabethan in style. The currently existing main altarpiece was developed by Joaquín de Churriguera.
