Iglesia Santa María Magdalena (St. Mary Magdalene Church), Cordoba
Saint Mary Magdalene is a stunning church built in the Mudejar style, which combines Romanesque, Gothic, and Islamic architectural elements. The church was built by Fernando III after he conquered Córdoba in 1236 and was one of the first of 12 churches constructed at that time. It is located in the prosperous neighborhood of La Magdalena, east of the city center, and is part of the Historic center of Córdoba, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The church's main entrance is at the west end, beneath a beautiful rose window, and the oldest door in Córdoba, with decorations of pointed diamonds, is on the south side. The tower, built in the 17th century, consists of sections that become narrower towards the top. Over the years, the building has undergone several transformations, including the addition of a sacristy in the early 16th century and plastered ceiling vaults in the 18th century.
Unfortunately, the church was severely damaged by a fire in 1990 and was subsequently deconsecrated. It is now owned by the Cajasur bank and serves as a venue for concerts and other cultural events. Despite its change of use, the church's beauty and historical significance remain intact, making it a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. Santa María Magdalena is a testament to the rich cultural and architectural heritage of Córdoba and serves as a reminder of its glorious past.
