Il Sentierone, Bergamo
Il Sentierone is a renowned avenue in Bergamo. It holds a prominent position in the lower city and is adorned with various shops and significant landmarks, including the Gaetano Donizetti Theater on the parallel Largo Gianandrea Gavazzeni and the church of Santi Bartolomeo e Stefano.
Originally constructed in 1620, the Sentierone served as a connection between the church of San Bartolomeo and the nearby convent of Santa Lucia, close to which stands the Palazzo Frizzoni, the town hall. Initially, it was a modest pathway that traversed the Sant'Alessandro meadow, a vast green space bordered by Borgo San Leonardo to the southwest and Borgo Sant'Antonio to the northeast. For several centuries, this meadow was the site of the Fiera di Sant'Alessandro, a renowned fair.
In the early 17th century, the Venetian podestà Niccolò Gussoni decided to enhance the avenue by paving it and constructing the Colonne di Prato, which still delineate the symbolic boundary between the Sentierone and via XX Settembre.
During the 20th century, Il Sentierone underwent modernization as part of the city center's redevelopment under the Fascist regime, overseen by architect Marcello Piacentini. The construction of the Quadriportico, a monumental portico overlooking the avenue, transformed the area. Within the Quadriportico lies Piazza Dante Alighieri, further contributing to the Sentierone's charm. These changes turned the Sentierone into a beloved destination for shopping and leisurely strolls.
Il Sentierone hosts several significant events that greatly impact the city. The Booksellers Fair, Mercatanti in Fiera, the swearing-in ceremony of students from the Academy of the Guardia di Finanza, the commemoration of 25 April, and the lively stalls during the Christmas season and the traditional patronal feast of Sant'Alessandro are just a few examples.

Bergamo Introduction Walking Tour
The first thing you notice about Bergamo is topography. Situated at the foothills of the Italian Alps, in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, Bergamo has been divided into two parts, the Upper Town and the Lower Town (Città Alta and Città Bassa), since the 15th century. The flat Lower Town rises steeply to the Upper Town, perched on a picturesque hill's crest.
