Insole Court, Cardiff

Insole Court, Cardiff

Insole Court is a remarkable Victorian Gothic mansion nestled in Llandaff, Cardiff. Originally built in 1855 by W G & E Habershon for the prosperous businessman James Harvey Insole, the estate reflects the architectural evolution and historical richness of the era. Initially, a modest double-fronted building named Ely Court, the mansion underwent significant transformations as the Insole family's fortunes intertwined with Cardiff's rise as a coal and rail hub.

Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the mansion was expanded and modernized, notably through Gothic Revival enhancements akin to those seen at Cardiff Castle. These included the addition of a neo-Gothic tower in 1874 and extensive renovations in 1906 that added modern comforts and expanded living spaces.

However, the decline of the South Wales coal industry after World War I adversely affected the Insole family, leading to the sale of the property to Cardiff Council in 1932 under a compulsory purchase order. The mansion then served various public functions, including as an Air Raid Warden HQ during World War II, and later housing council flats and community activities.

Insole Court was heritage listed in 1992, with both the mansion and its gardens receiving recognition for their historical and architectural significance. The Insole Court Trust took over operations in 2016, initiating extensive refurbishments that led to the reopening of the mansion to the public in September 2017. The first floor now features an exhibition that explores the Insole family's history through an immersive "play for voices."

Today, Insole Court is not only a historical site but also a vibrant community hub. It offers daily classes, activities, and facilities like The Potting Shed Café. The grounds and mansion are open to visitors free of charge, continuing to celebrate and preserve the rich heritage of the Insole family and the broader Cardiff community.
