James Hall Transport Museum, Johannesburg

James Hall Transport Museum, Johannesburg

The James Hall Transport Museum (JHTM) in Johannesburg, preserves and promotes a 400-year history of transportation in Africa. It's the largest museum of its kind on the continent, founded in 1964 by Jimmie Hall in collaboration with the City of Johannesburg.

One of the prominent exhibits showcases carriages dating back to the period between 1870 and 1910. This collection features Cape carts, which were specially adapted two-wheeled carriages designed for South African road conditions. Additionally, visitors can explore rickshaws, hearses, mail coaches, and ox wagons from the same era.

For enthusiasts of early two-wheeled vehicles, the museum offers a captivating assortment that includes penny-farthings, tandems, tricycles, vintage motorcycles, and classic motorcycles.

The museum's collection of buses and coaches is equally impressive, featuring double-decker buses formerly in service in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban. Of particular note is a fully operational 1952 RT double-decker London bus, used for sightseeing tours, as well as a rare 1958 Guy double-decker diesel bus—one of only 30 ever manufactured.

The museum features a diverse collection of firefighting equipment and vehicles, including a 1913 Merryweather Steam Pump, a 1947 Dennis with an 8-cylinder Rolls-Royce engine, a 1936 Magirus Deutz with a 45-meter extension ladder, and a Ford Thames fire engine from the Randburg Fire Department.

Additionally, it houses Johannesburg's first horse-drawn tram, in service from 1891 to 1902 at a top speed of 11 kilometers per hour, drawn by a pair of horses on a road track. The museum also showcases the last tram to operate in Johannesburg until March 18, 1961, as well as double-decker electric trams.
