Japan Coast Guard Museum Yokohama, Yokohama

Japan Coast Guard Museum Yokohama, Yokohama

The Japan Coast Guard Museum Yokohama, which opened its doors to the public on December 10, 2004, is an important cultural and educational establishment situated in Yokohama. Its main goal is to educate the public about Japan's maritime environment and emphasize the crucial significance of maritime security. Located against the scenic backdrop of Yokohama Bay and tucked behind the iconic Red Brick Warehouse, this distinctive museum offers free admission to all visitors. Despite its modest appearance from the outside, the museum houses a fascinating collection of maritime artifacts and stories.

The museum features a display highlighting a suspicious ship incident off Kyushu's southwestern waters on December 22, 2001. This incident represents Japan's challenges in safeguarding its maritime borders. It includes remnants of a North Korean vessel involved in espionage within Japanese waters, disguised as a fishing boat. Equipped with advanced machinery, a machine gun, and a concealed speedboat, it also carried diving gear, radios, and maps. The encounter culminated in the North Korean ship self-destructing, depicted through various exhibits, including a video of the sea battle.

Beyond this particular incident, the museum sheds light on nearly a dozen major operations conducted by the Japan Coast Guard to combat illicit activities like smuggling and espionage in the nation's waters. Artifacts recovered from these missions, including weapons and contraband from a sunken North Korean ship in the early 1990s, underscore the Coast Guard's crucial role in national security.

While the primary focus of the Japan Coast Guard Museum Yokohama is on examining maritime security incidents in detail, it also serves as an educational platform about the Coast Guard's functions and accomplishments. Information panels offer a basic overview of the Coast Guard's duties and contributions to national safety.
