Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, Johannesburg

Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, Johannesburg (must see)

The Johannesburg Botanical Garden is situated in the Emmarentia suburb of Johannesburg. Its origins trace back to a sizeable rose garden established in 1964, colloquially referred to as the "Rose Garden." Over the years, it underwent expansion, covering an extensive area of approximately 125 hectares (equivalent to 1.25 square kilometers) by 1969. The administration of this garden falls under Johannesburg City Parks. Adjacent to the garden lies the Emmarentia Dam, sharing its vast expanse. One of the prominent attractions within the garden is the Rose Garden, boasting an impressive collection of over 10,000 roses.

This botanical garden occupies land that once formed part of the Braamfontein farm, one of several extensive farms contributing to the present-day city of Johannesburg and its surrounding suburbs. The farm's history dates back to as early as 1853. In 1886, Lourens Geldenhuys purchased the land primarily for its mining rights, hoping that the Confidence Reef would extend into his property, which, unfortunately, did not materialize. The land continued to function as a farm, and by 1891, it had been divided between his two sons, Frans and Louw, who had already constructed two farmhouses.

In 1933, a portion of the farm comprising 13 hectares was generously donated to the City of Johannesburg for the establishment of parks and recreational spaces. Subsequently, additional parcels of land were acquired, leading to the creation of Jan van Riebeeck Park (1952), Emmarentia Dam (1939), West Park Cemetery (1942), Marks Park Sports Club (1951), and the Johannesburg Botanical Garden (1968).
