Johanniskirche (Saint John's Church), Dusseldorf

Saint John's Church (Johanneskirche) in Dusseldorf is a notable Protestant landmark with an impressive 88-meter tower, dominating the Martin-Luther-Platz in central Dusseldorf. Built from 1875 to 1881 in the Romanesque Revival style, it stands as the city’s largest Protestant church and the first to be freely situated on a square, symbolizing the confidence of Dusseldorf's Protestant community in the late 19th century. The church was initially conceptualized in 1824, but construction only began in earnest over fifty years later due to financial constraints and Catholic opposition to building on the centrally-located Konigsplatz.

Architects Walter Kyllmann and Adolf Heyden contributed to its design, finalizing a round-arch style that replaced earlier Gothic proposals due to budget and space limitations. Upon its consecration in 1881, Saint John's Church became a celebrated Protestant site with a capacity for 1,600 attendees, featuring Corinthian and Doric columns and Renaissance-inspired interiors. However, World War II inflicted severe damage on the structure in a 1943 bombing raid, destroying much of the interior and rendering it unusable until a restoration in 1953.

The post-war redesign adapted the space for both church services and concerts, adding tightly arranged seating and a new organ by Beckerath. Later renovations, including a significant 2008 overhaul, uncovered elements of the pre-war church and enhanced the space with contemporary design features, like glass balustrades and steeper galleries for better visibility. Today, the church regularly hosts classical concerts, events, and midday organ sessions, seating nearly 900 and serving as a focal point for Protestant and cultural life in Dusseldorf.

Dusseldorf Introduction Walking Tour

The area at the confluence of the Rhine and Dussel rivers was on the outskirts of the Roman Empire and settled by Germanic fishing tribes. It is from these small beginnings that the town takes its name. "Dorf" translates to "village" in English. The city of Dusseldorf has since grown far larger than that original eighth-century fishing village.

Just as London has given us Porter, Dublin – Stout, Burton – the original (English) IPA, and Cologne – Kolsch, Dusseldorf has contributed to the world of beers its signature Altbier. They say, Dusseldorf and Altbier go together like onion rings and blood sausage.
