John Frostbrug (John Frost Bridge), Arnhem
The John Frost Bridge is a practical road bridge spanning the Lower Rhine. It was named after Major-General John Dutton Frost (1912–1993), who led the British forces during the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944, a crucial event in World War II. You might remember this bridge from the 1977 film "A Bridge Too Far," but it was actually filmed at a similar bridge in Deventer, not in Arnhem.
After Arnhem was liberated in April 1945, they put up a Bailey bridge next to the damaged one. However, this temporary bridge had limitations, so they replaced it with a higher Bailey bridge. Later on, they rebuilt a new Rijnbrug to look exactly like the original one that had been destroyed, and it opened in 1948.
In 1977, the Arnhem road bridge was officially renamed John Frostbrug to honor Major-General Frost's role during the Battle of Arnhem.
Additionally, the John Frost Bridge is historically important because it was the site of the World Liberty Concert on May 8, 1995, which marked the 50th anniversary of Europe's liberation. This concert was one of the largest memorial concerts ever held in the Netherlands, making the bridge a symbol of remembrance in the region.
