Johokubashi Catholic Church, Nagoya

The Johokubashi Catholic Church, situated near Nagoya Castle and Meijo Park in Nagoya, is a notable Catholic church that offers a rare oasis of tranquility and greenery close to the city center. As part of the Diocese of Nagoya, this church stands out not only for its location but also for its accessibility, featuring a large parking lot that welcomes both local and visiting worshippers.

Celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2023, the Johokubashi Church has a rich history that dates back to its foundation in 1953. It was established through the collaborative efforts of Father Archibald Bryson, a military priest from the Australian Army, and Bishop Matsuoka Sonshiro, then the head of the Diocese of Nagoya. Their partnership led to the consecration of the church on January 15, 1953, with the blessings of Archbishop Furstenberg, a Papal Envoy, and the local mayor.

Originally known as the "God's Heart Church," the Johokubashi Church was dedicated to the will of Jesus and has since served as a spiritual home to many. It provides a full range of traditional Catholic services, catering to both the local Catholic community and visitors in the area. The church's proximity to significant city landmarks and its embeddedness in nature make it a unique place of worship and reflection within the bustling environment of Nagoya.
