Jubilee Hall, Nashville
Jubilee Hall, the most historic building at Fisk University in Nashville was completed in 1876. It's known for its Gothic Revival style and was the university's initial permanent structure. Recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1974, it symbolizes Fisk University's status as one of the earliest universities for African Americans established post-Civil War. Currently, it functions as a residence hall for undergraduates. In 2017, the Tennessee Historical Commission recognized the Fisk Jubilee Singers with a marker. Their 1870s European tour raised the necessary funds for constructing Jubilee Hall.
Situated on Fisk University's northern side, Jubilee Hall is a prominent L-shaped building. It stands six stories tall and features a hip roof with gabled dormers and projections. The building's main front has a central section flanked by protruding end sections, with a tower at the center-right intersection. This tower, adorned with Gothic spires, culminates in an octagonal belfry and steeple. The windows, often in pairs, sit in arched openings with stone lintels. The roof's cornice is intricately designed with decorative brickwork.
The building was designed by New York architect Stephen D. Hatch. While the exterior remains largely unchanged, the interior of Jubilee Hall has been fully updated to accommodate dormitory living. It also features a large portrait of the original Jubilee Singers, gifted by Queen Victoria during the 1873 tour.
