Kaisariani Monastery, Athens
This ancient monastery, perched on the slopes of a hill on Mount Hymettus, stands as one of the oldest in Attica. Surrounded by a lush, green landscape not far from Athens' city center, the medieval church was established during the Byzantine era, in the late 11th century, and was dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary. The frescoes inside reflect the hagiography of Mount Athos and Cretan painting, dating back to around 1700.
Numerous historical sources suggest that the monastery was constructed upon the ruins of a Roman sanctuary. There are various theories about its name, with the most prevalent ones linking it to the icon of the Virgin Mary brought from Caesarea, a founding abbot named Kaisaron, or a Caesar who oversaw the church's renovation during the Byzantine era. In its past, the monastery had a library rich in materials and served as a center of philosophy. Renowned scholars, including George Plethon Gemistos, one of the late Byzantine period's most famous philosophers, taught here.
The site is surrounded by a lush forest with diverse trees, shrubs, and rare plants, creating a serene and tranquil atmosphere with a stunning view. This forest features an extensive network of hiking trails and is a popular destination for picnics in Athens.
Why You Should Visit:
While there are other surviving Byzantine structures, this one stands out due to its proximity to downtown Athens on the slopes of Mount Hymettos. A significant Christian landmark, it offers a perfect setting for relaxation and meditation in natural surroundings, whether you're traveling alone, with a partner, family, or a group.
Tip:
Near the monastery (about 800 meters down the road), you'll find the Kalopoula municipal kiosk. It's a great place to enjoy a coffee or snack under the trees in an idyllic environment, and the prices are quite reasonable.

Athens Food Walking Tour
Traditional Greek cuisine is one of the healthiest in the world, and prices in all but the flashiest establishments afford excellent value. Greece’s most famous slow-cooked oven dish, however, is probably... view more
