Kaiser Strasse, Frankfurt
Kaiserstrasse in Frankfurt am Main, originally a symbol of Wilhelminian-era opulence, was built from 1874 to 1888. It's a rare enclave where genuine 18th-century buildings survived World War II. The section leading to the main station is known for adult-oriented shops and nightlife, while the other end towards the city center showcases affluence with upscale jewelry stores and boutiques, preserving opulence from the past.
Kaiserstrasse begins at the city's heart, near Roßmarkt and Hauptwache, and runs through the center, leading to Kaiserplatz. The Commerzbank Tower, Central Europe's tallest skyscraper, stands on the north side. The south side includes the luxurious Frankfurter Hof hotel and the Junior House. A granite fountain, gifted by Frankfurt banker Raphael von Erlanger in 1876, graces the square.
West of Kaiserplatz, you'll find the intersection with Neue Mainzer Strasse just 80 meters away. This spot lies in Frankfurt's financial district and offers a view northward into Neue Mainzer Straße, known for its pedestrian bridges and TV appearances. At Kaiserstrasse's corner, you'll see the former Commerzbank high-rise and the K26 high-rise. On the south side of Kaiserstrasse, there's a corner building on Neue Mainzer Strasse, designed by Paul Wallot in 1875, featuring Wilhelminian architectural elements in the Tuscan Renaissance style.
Lastly, on September 2, 2021, a monument dedicated to the Kindertransport, created by Israeli artist Yael Bartana in memory of Jewish children who had to emigrate without their parents in 1938/39, was unveiled on the sidewalk at the southwestern intersection of Kaiserstrasse and Gallusanlage.
