Kakaako Waterfront Park, Honolulu

Kakaako Waterfront Park is a public park south of downtown Honolulu. It was created on a capped, disused municipal landfill, immediately adjacent to the ocean. The park is 35 acres, and features water fountains, picnic tables, miles of jogging paths, and an amphitheater. It's also the home of two popular surfing spots- Point Panic and Flies. There's a seaside promenade along a lava rock wall, and concrete steps leading to the ocean.

Though the Kakaako Waterfront Park originated as a landfill, don't let that fool you- the park is nothing but rolling, green, grassy hills down to the ocean. The only traces of the old landfill left are a few vents scattered throughout the park. The park itself does not have beach access, but the promenade extends out to Diamond Head, where visitors can watch surfers and enjoy fireworks every Friday evening. The park is also adorned by a number of sculptures, include Lahui, by Sean K.L. Browne, Ano Lani, by Frank Sheriff, and a monument to those lost in the collision between the high school ship Ehime Maru and USS Greeneville submarine in 2001.

Today, the park is managed by the Hawaii Community Development Corporation.
