Kaohsiung Port Warehouse 2, Kaohsiung
Most visitors to Kaohsiung only know about Pier Art 2 Center, but there’s another cool, revamped warehouse complex just around the corner to add to your list of things to do. And that’s KW2, or Kaohsiung Port Warehouse 2. This hip warehouse complex houses a fantastic selection of stalls selling crafts, independent designer goods, food stalls, and even a minimalistic hostel. It’s a great place to shop for an assortment of goodies, grab some gelato or craft beer, or chill at one of the restaurants. We really liked hanging out at the outdoor restaurant. They had a good selection of cold beer and picture-perfect views over Cijin Island. If you’re planning to go to Cijin afterward and don’t feel like making the trip all the way to the Gushan Ferry Terminal, you can catch the Snoopy Ferry along the promenade. It’s a bit more pricey than the normal ferry, but it will save you the hassle of getting to Gushan.
Kaohsiung Port Warehouse No.2 (KW2) is located at Pier 2 in Kaohsiung Port. During the Japanese occupation period, it was a single-story warehouse with brick walls and a tile roof, but after being damaged during World War II, it was rebuilt from reinforced concrete combined with a reinforced steel roof truss in the 1950s. The building has no pillars to facilitate the movement of goods in and out. After the warehouse was retired, Kaohsiung City Government designated it an historical building in 2003. Currently, the 3,000-square-meter space combines classic food, handmade products, and a terrace with an amazing sea view, making it the most beautiful location where Taiwanese professionals and tourists can meet.
The 104-year-old KW2 is a warehouse built in suburban Shinhamacho by the Japanese in 1914, to store and transport sugar. It was bombarded by the U.S. army during the Second World War and rebuilt by the nationalist government in 1962. Full of historical meaning, the gigantic building was listed as a heritage site by the Kaohsiung City Government in 2013. Now we sell cultural and creative goods, hold exhibitions, and serve food at once. ***PH***
