Killesberg Park, Stuttgart
Killesberg Park, officially known as Höhenpark Killesberg, spans approximately 123 acres in the northern Stuttgart district of Stuttgart-Nord. Originally a quarry, the park was transformed into a vibrant public space for the 1939 horticultural show. Since its establishment, it has been a central venue for major garden festivals such as the Federal Garden Show (Bundesgartenschau) and the International Horticultural Exhibition (Internationale Gartenbauausstellung).
The park is renowned for its rich array of horticultural displays and regularly hosts events that draw visitors from all over. One of the highlights is the annual Festival of Lights (Lichterfest) in July, where thousands of lanterns light up the park, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display set to music, making it a favorite event for families.
Since 1950, the Killesberg Railway, a 381-millimeter narrow-gauge railway, has been a popular attraction within the park. Originally introduced with borrowed steam engines for the 1939 show, it now operates with both diesel and steam locomotives, offering scenic rides during the summer months. Additionally, up until the 1980s, a chairlift provided visitors with panoramic views of the surrounding fairgrounds and parklands.
A notable landmark within the park is the Bismarck Tower. Located on the Gaehkopf, the highest point in northern Stuttgart, this 20-meter-high tower offers expansive views of the city and its environs. It was constructed in 1902 and opened in 1904, commemorating Otto von Bismarck. The tower, part of a larger initiative that planned over 410 towers worldwide, was renovated significantly on its 100th anniversary in 2004.
Killesberg Park remains a cherished urban retreat in Stuttgart, offering a blend of historical attractions, natural beauty, and vibrant cultural activities, making it a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists.
