Killesberg Tower, Stuttgart
The Killesberg Tower, standing at 40.4 meters, is an observation tower located in Killesberg Park in Stuttgart. Despite being planned for the 1993 World Horticultural Exposition, its construction was completed only in 2001. This tower is notable for its unique engineering and architectural design, which features a combination of aesthetics and functionality.
At the core of its design is a central mast, which is innovatively hinged at the base via a steel ball to the foundation. This design supports a complex net of steel cables arranged in triangular meshes. This net is anchored between a circular concrete foundation at the base and a pressure ring at 33.5 meters above the ground. The pressure ring itself is suspended from the top of the mast by additional cables, creating a tensioned structure that supports the entire tower.
The tower has four observation decks located at heights of 8, 16, 24, and 31 meters. Each deck is connected to the central mast and secured to the surrounding cable net via press fittings. This method of connection ensures stability and safety while minimizing visual obstructions, offering visitors clear panoramic views of the surrounding park and beyond.
Accessibility is provided by two separate spiral staircases—one for ascending and another for descending. These staircases are uniquely supported only by the cable net, showcasing the net's strength and the precision required in its construction.
The Killesberg Tower is not only a significant landmark in Stuttgart but also a marvel of modern architectural engineering, reflecting a harmonious blend of design and structural integrity.
