Kirche Saint Franziskus (Saint Francis Church), Basel
The Saint Francis Church (Franziskuskirche) in Riehen, Basel, stands as a testament to modern ecclesiastical architecture and spiritual symbolism. Located on Äusseren Baselstrasse, this church was completed in 1950 under the direction of Zurich architect Fritz Metzger. Recognized as one of Riehen's cultural landmarks, the church's design embodies the inclusive spirit of the Second Vatican Council. Its unique architectural elements, such as the transverse oval choir and trapezoidal nave with a gently sloping gable roof, create an inviting space that draws the faithful closer to the altar.
In 1989, artist Pierre Casè from Ticino reimagined the interior to reflect the creation spirituality of Saint Francis. The vibrant wall colors evoke natural elements like autumn leaves, summer skies, snow, and sunsets, a nod to Saint Francis' Canticle of the Sun. The "Arte Povera" crosses scattered throughout the church serve as a poignant reminder of God's presence in human suffering. The altar and ambo, crafted from Maggia granite, concrete, and brass, further enhance the sacred ambiance.
Musically, the church boasts an organ built by Hans Fuglister in 1991 and inaugurated in 1992. This instrument, inspired by baroque Alsatian organ-building traditions, features 25 registers spread across two manuals and a pedal, enriching worship services with its resonant tones.
A striking feature of the church is its 35-meter-high freestanding bell tower, reminiscent of a campanile. Designed with a pent roof, the tower houses four bells dedicated to the Four Evangelists, sculpted by Albert Schilling and cast in Aarau in 1959.
Serving the Catholics of Riehen and Bettingen, the Saint Francis Church is the heart of the parish community, fostering active participation through its vibrant parish hall. This space is more than a meeting place; it welcomes large gatherings, reflecting the church’s mission to embrace all in faith and fellowship.

Basel's Historical Churches
Basel is the city of churches. Indeed, nowhere else in Switzerland will you find as many of them, both old and new, as here. Despite serious losses to the Reformation period, a good number of local temples have survived. Today, the vast majority of religious buildings, including the listed medieval Basel Minster, belong to the Evangelical Reformed Church.

Basel Introduction Walking Tour
The modern and bustling city of Basel gets its name from a third-century Roman castle that stood here. It is likely the modernization of "Villa Basilius," or "Estate of Basilius." Interestingly, the basilisk has been closely associated with the city and used in the coat of arms and coins. The association is likely simple assonance rather than anything more profound.
