Kızılay Square, Ankara
July 15 Kızılay National Will Square, previously known as Kızılay Square, holds significant importance as a central hub in Ankara. Its history includes a series of name changes, reflecting the evolving political landscape.
Originally, it was named Kızılay Square in reference to the Turkish Red Crescent headquarters constructed nearby in 1929. However, this building was later replaced by the Kızılay AVM shopping mall in 2011 after a lengthy legal process. At the time of its naming, the city center was situated to the north of Kızılay. Nevertheless, urban planners, including Hermann Jansen, oversaw the expansion of Ankara, gradually shifting the city's center to the neighborhoods surrounding the square, which are now collectively known as Kızılay.
In the wake of the 1960 coup d'état on May 27, the square was formally renamed Liberty Square, although it continued to be commonly referred to as Kızılay Square by the local population. The most recent name changes occurred in the aftermath of the failed coup attempt on July 15, 2016. Initially, on July 26, 2016, the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality decided to rename it as July 15 Kızılay Democracy Square. This name was later modified to July 15 Kızılay National Will Square on August 9, 2016. Nonetheless, the square is still predominantly known as Kızılay Square among the city's residents.
