Koelewei Mill, Brugge
The Koelewei Mill, situated on the Kruisvest in Bruges, is one of the historical windmills that marks the city's rich milling heritage. This windmill is part of a group of four remaining windmills located on the city’s eastern ramparts, a testament to the city's longstanding relationship with these structures since the 13th century.
Originally constructed in the 1760s, the Koelewei Mill, stood in Meulebeke before it was dismantled. The mill, a reconstruction of the Bosterhout Mill, was moved to its current location in Bruges in 1996. This relocation was part of a plan that initially involved moving the mill only a few meters to make way for a new path. However, after the plan was abandoned, the mill was sold to the city of Bruges, which completed its reconstruction.
Today, the Koelewei Mill continues to function as a grain mill, just like it did in its original setting. Alongside its operational role, it houses a small museum that offers visitors insights into the historical and functional aspects of windmills. Its existence alongside the Sint-Janshuis Mill, which dates back to 1770 and still stands in its original location, contributes significantly to preserving and celebrating Bruges' milling history.
This historical windmill not only represents a piece of Bruges’ architectural and industrial history but also continues to serve a functional purpose, connecting past and present uniquely and educationally.
