KOMTAR Tower, George Town
Completed in 1988, the KOMTAR Tower stands as Penang's tallest skyscraper, soaring nearly 249 meters high. KOMTAR, which stands for Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak, is a versatile complex housing administrative offices of the Penang state government, including the Chief Minister's office, as well as the Penang Island City Council, retail establishments, and a transportation hub. Its towering presence makes it one of the most distinctive landmarks on Penang Island.
Named after Malaysia's second Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak, who presided over its groundbreaking in 1974, KOMTAR was conceived by the second Chief Minister of Penang, Dr. Lim Chong Eu, as a means to rejuvenate George Town; however, the project's implementation involved the demolition of traditional shophouses and even entire neighborhoods, leading to controversy. The resulting displacement of residents contributed to the urban decay surrounding KOMTAR, undermining its intended revitalization effect. By the 2000s, KOMTAR was viewed by many Penangites as a costly failure, with calls for its demolition echoing throughout the city.
In 2013, a significant renovation project began, featuring the installation of bubble lifts, the addition of three additional levels, and the refurbishment of various floors to create upscale commercial and recreational spaces. In 2016, the Rainbow Skywalk was introduced on the 68th floor, becoming the highest glass walkway in Malaysia.
Visitors can explore exhibits and models at the Penang State Gallery and Durian Gallery before ascending to The Top on level 65 to enjoy the observation deck and the glass-floored section offering excellent views below. The Rainbow Skywalk, a horseshoe-shaped glass walkway, provides a thrilling experience high above the streets and buildings of George Town. Meanwhile, at the ground level, visitors can find various fairground attractions, arcade games, and dining options.
Overall, a visit to KOMTAR offers an enjoyable way to spend an hour or more, with terrific views from the upper levels (note that visitors opting to ascend are required to remove their shoes to prevent scratching the glass surface).
