Korkeasaari Zoo, Helsinki

Korkeasaari Zoo, located in Helsinki, is the country's largest zoo and a popular spot for both locals and tourists. Established back in 1889, its initial focus was on showcasing Finland's native wildlife. However, over time, it has expanded significantly. Today, it is home to around 150 different animal species and hosts a diverse collection of approximately a thousand plant varieties.

The zoo's exhibits are carefully curated to ensure the well-being of its inhabitants, which include mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, and invertebrates, adapting to Finland's climate. Consequently, certain species, like elephants, rhinoceroses, and hippopotamuses, which aren't suited to the local weather, are intentionally not present.

Situated on an island, Korkeasaari Zoo is easily accessible. In the summer, visitors can take ferries and water buses from Market Square and Hakaniemi. Alternatively, throughout the year, a bridge provides access from the Helsinki district of Mustikkamaa to the mainland.

The zoo is committed to conservation, participating in the European Endangered Species Programme, managing the European studbook for markhors, and organizing fundraising events like the Night of Cats to support projects for endangered species such as Amur leopards and tigers. It is a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria and the International Union for Conservation of Nature, showcasing its dedication to wildlife preservation. It also runs a wildlife hospital for injured and orphaned animals.

Korkeasaari Zoo features two tropical buildings, Amazonia and Africasia, showcasing species from their respective regions, providing visitors with a glimpse of life's diversity from around the world. It's more than just a place to see animals; it's an active participant in global efforts to conserve biodiversity.
