Kunsthalle (Art Gallery), Dusseldorf

The Art Gallery (Kunsthalle), located on Grabbeplatz, stands as a vibrant center for contemporary art within Dusseldorf. Built in 1967, this Brutalist-style structure by architects Konrad Beckmann and Brockes is distinctive for its precast concrete construction, earning it the nickname “art bunker” due to its imposing, windowless façade. Unlike other museums, the Kunsthalle houses no permanent collection, focusing instead on a dynamic array of exhibitions that explore contemporary art movements and current social themes.

Since its inception, the Art Gallery has encouraged artistic experimentation and international dialogue. The “Prospect” exhibition series (1968-1976) introduced many international artists to the European art scene, solidifying the venue’s reputation as a launchpad for emerging and established talents alike. Key exhibitions such as “Back to Concrete” and “Eating the Universe” have attracted wide acclaim, drawing connections between contemporary art and subcultures.

The building underwent extensive renovation in 2002, modernizing its interiors to enhance gallery spaces with refined, smooth surfaces and optimized lighting. The design preserved original architectural elements while updating spaces like the cashier’s desk, bookshop, bar, and foyer to reflect the cubist style of the Art Gallery. A peculiar installation on the western wall, Joseph Beuys’ “Black Hole” pipe from 1981, exemplifies the site’s unique character.

Today, the Dusseldorf Art Gallery remains a pivotal institution, hosting thought-provoking exhibitions that feature both global and local artists. The building also houses the Amateur Fair (Salon des Amateurs), a renowned avant-garde electronic music nightclub, underscoring the Art Gallery’s role as a cultural hotspot where art and music intersect.

The area at the confluence of the Rhine and Dussel rivers was on the outskirts of the Roman Empire and settled by Germanic fishing tribes. It is from these small beginnings that the town takes its name. "Dorf" translates to "village" in English. The city of Dusseldorf has since grown far larger than that original eighth-century fishing village.

Dusseldorf's Old Beer (Altbier) Walk

Just as London has given us Porter, Dublin – Stout, Burton – the original (English) IPA, and Cologne – Kolsch, Dusseldorf has contributed to the world of beers its signature Altbier. They say, Dusseldorf and Altbier go together like onion rings and blood sausage. Curiously enough, though, this delicious, cool-fermented and malty brew, ranging in color from dark brown to copper, is not...  view more
