Kunsthalle Mainz (Mainz Art Hall), Mainz
The Mainz Art Hall (Kunsthalle Mainz) is a contemporary art exhibition center situated in the historic customs port of Mainz, housed in what was once a boiler and machine house designed by Eduard Kreyßig in 1887. This industrial building was transformed in 2006 under the guidance of the Berlin architectural firm led by Günter Zamp Kelp. The renovation preserved the character of the long, single-story brick structure while adding a distinctive 21-meter-high tower, tilted at a striking seven-degree angle. This tower serves as a modern architectural landmark in the area, symbolizing the fusion of old and new.
Opened on March 1, 2008, the Mainz Art Hall features 840 square meters of exhibition space, including three spacious galleries in the original building and three intimate cabinet-style rooms within the tower. The adjacent engine shed has been repurposed into a café, adding a welcoming element to the site.
The Mainz Art Hall is known for its temporary exhibitions that showcase cutting-edge contemporary art, hosting both solo and thematic displays of international acclaim. It also offers a wide-ranging educational and cultural program, with workshops and guided tours for all ages, and additional events such as artist talks, discussions, and lectures. In 2012, a dedicated screening room was established, showcasing video works by renowned artists like Joan Jonas, Pipilotti Rist, and Matthew Barney.
