Kyoto Botanical Gardens, Kyoto

Kyoto Botanical Gardens, Kyoto

Kyoto's original name of Heian-kyo, or the "Capital of Peace and Tranquility", might seem like a bit of a misnomer amidst the constant buzz of downtown. But fear not, weary traveler, for nestled next to the Kamo River lies a haven of greenery and serenity: the Botanical Gardens. Not merely a sanctuary for nature enthusiasts, it's also a godsend for families, complete with a playground for the little ones. And for those pesky rainy days, take refuge in the conservatory, where you'll find solace among 12,000 species of plants.

After the emperor bid farewell to Kyoto in 1868, the city embarked on a spree of "firsts"—from elementary schools to power stations, and yes, even cinemas. And wouldn't you know it, Kyoto also bagged the title of hosting Japan's first botanical garden in 1924. Talk about a green thumb! Today, it stands tall as the oldest and grandest of its kind in the country, offering a diverse landscape showcasing everything from native Japanese plants to bonsai wonders.

Spring and autumn are, of course, prime time to visit. With 500 cherry trees flaunting their floral finery, including a whopping 100 different varieties, and maple trees painting the landscape with a kaleidoscope of autumnal hues, it's no wonder visitors flock here. But truth be told, any time of year is a treat for the senses. From hydrangeas to lotuses, and sunflowers to succulents, there's always something blooming.

In summer, the pond outside the conservatory is a riot of lilies, while indoors, seven different sections play host to 4,500 species of tropical plants. Orchids, succulents, and savanna grasses—all under one roof! For those accustomed to Japan's understated palette, the explosion of colors and fragrances here is rather striking. Here, in the Botanical Gardens, Kyoto reclaims its former title as the "flowering capital", proving that serenity and beauty still reign supreme.

Tip:
While the different areas are clearly marked with signs, it's always a smart move to grab the free English-language map available at the entrance.
