Lady Spray Fountain, Indianapolis
The Lady Spray Fountain, located at the intersection of Virginia Avenue, Prospect Street, and Shelby Street in Fountain Square, has a rich history spanning over a century and four iterations. The first fountain, erected in 1889, featured a classical design with drinking stations for both horses and humans. Crowned by a cast iron statue of Hebe, the Greek goddess of youth, the fountain became affectionately known as “Lady Spray.” This initiative was funded by local business owners, symbolizing the community spirit of Fountain Square.
The second fountain was commissioned in the early 1920s and unveiled in 1924 as a tribute to former Indiana Congressman Ralph Hill. Atop the fountain stood "Pioneer Family," a bronze sculpture by Myra Reynolds Richards, a prominent artist and instructor at the John Heron Art Institute in Indianapolis. This artwork was relocated to Garfield Park in 1954, but public advocacy ensured its return to Fountain Square in 1969.
The third version of the fountain, including its base and pedestal, was installed during the 1980s as part of ongoing efforts to maintain the area’s historical charm. However, the current fountain, installed in 2009 and dedicated in 2010, marks a return to its origins. Crafted from molds of a historic fountain in Watertown, New York, it revives the original aesthetic with a new rendition of Hebe perched atop.
Today, “Lady Spray” stands proudly once more, embodying the legacy and evolving history of Fountain Square. The fountain is a testament to the neighborhood’s resilience and dedication to preserving its cultural landmarks.
