Lake View Cemetery, Cleveland

Lake View Cemetery, Cleveland (must see)

Lake View Cemetery, established in 1869, is a sprawling and meticulously landscaped garden cemetery straddling the cities of Cleveland, Cleveland Heights, and East Cleveland. A privately owned, nonprofit burial ground, Lake View has become known for its picturesque vistas, grand funerary monuments, and the final resting places of many notable figures. During the Gilded Age, it was particularly favored by wealthy families, who commissioned extravagant mausoleums and memorials, leaving a legacy of architectural splendor.

Among Lake View Cemetery’s most notable landmarks are the James A. Garfield Memorial and Wade Memorial Chapel, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Garfield Memorial, completed in 1890, commemorates the assassinated 20th U.S. President, James A. Garfield. The elaborate structure includes a marble statue of Garfield, stained glass, and bas-relief carvings, alongside historical artifacts from his life and presidency. Visitors can explore the lower-level crypt where President Garfield and his wife rest side by side or enjoy scenic views from the upper observation deck.

The Wade Memorial Chapel, constructed between 1898 and 1901, is another highlight of the cemetery. It was built in memory of Jeptha Wade, one of the cemetery's founders, and donated by his grandson. The chapel’s interior was designed by Louis Tiffany, featuring intricate stained glass and mosaics. Behind the chapel lies a serene pond, adding to the tranquility of the surroundings.

The cemetery is also known for its many statues of angels, often crafted in a Victorian style. One of the most famous is the Angel of Death Victorious, located at the gravesite of the Haserot family and sculpted by Herman Matzen. The striking figure, with its eerie beauty, has become a symbol of Lake View’s artistic heritage.

Today, Lake View Cemetery continues to be a place of reverence, history, and natural beauty, offering visitors a unique blend of art, architecture, and landscape. Its tranquil environment and historical significance make it a cultural landmark, as well as a serene spot for remembrance and reflection.
