Lapangan Merdeka (Freedom Square), Jakarta (must see)
Freedom Square (Lapangan Merdeka) is an expansive and historically significant square situated in the heart of Jakarta. This square spans approximately one square kilometer, making it one of the largest squares globally. It dwarfs other notable squares such as Tiananmen Square and Place de la Concorde in size.
The centerpiece of this grand square is the National Monument, commonly referred to as Monas. This towering structure is a pivotal site for various national events, including military and float parades, as well as civic demonstrations. The area immediately around the monument is a well-paved plaza, while the surrounding expanse has been developed into a park with distinct features on each side.
To the north, Medan Merdeka Utara Park displays a bust of the renowned local poet, Chairil Anwar, and an equestrian statue of Prince Diponegoro, a Javanese prince celebrated for his resistance against Dutch colonization. Moving east, the park is adorned with a statue of Kartini, an iconic Indonesian heroine, alongside a serene reflecting pond. The southern part offers visitors a glimpse of local fauna with a spotted deer park and a botanical collection representing the flora of Indonesia’s 33 provinces. Additionally, this area hosts parking facilities and food stalls. Lastly, the western section, Medan Merdeka Utara Park, is known for its spectacular musical fountain that hosts illuminated shows every weekend evening.
Beyond its recreational and symbolic functions, Freedom Square is encircled by significant governmental and cultural buildings, adding to its stature. These include the Merdeka Palace, the National Museum, Jakarta City Hall, Istiqlal Mosque, the National Library, the Supreme Court, and various governmental ministries, enhancing both its touristic and administrative significance.
Historically, during the Dutch East Indies era, the square was known as King's Square. Today, it remains a beloved destination for Jakartans and tourists alike, especially popular for sports and recreational activities during weekends. This blend of cultural heritage, recreational space, and administrative importance makes Freedom Square a pivotal landmark in Jakarta.
