Latvijas Balzams Shop, Riga

Latvijas Balzams Shop in Riga is a notable destination for both tourists and locals alike, famed for offering an extensive selection of over 50 Latvian liquors. Among these, the most distinguished is the Rīga Black Balsam, revered not only as a traditional Latvian liqueur but also as the national drink of Latvia.

The history of Rīga Black Balsam extends back to the middle of the 18th century when it was first crafted by a local pharmacist named Kunze. The balsam is a complex concoction made from pure vodka and 24 natural ingredients, including a variety of plants, oils, and berries. This rich blend of ingredients is rooted in a tradition that dates back to the first balsams (herbal extracts) brought to Europe by Marco Polo at the end of the 13th century. Over the centuries, through the Hanseatic League, these balsams gained popularity across Europe and Russia.

Kunze's recipe, established in 1752, became famous for its supposed medicinal properties, often used as a remedy for indigestion and colds. This unique formula is protected as a closely guarded secret, known only to the Head Liquor Master and two apprentices at JSC Latvijas Balzams, the current producers of the drink.

Production involves a meticulous process where the herbal infusion, once matured, is combined with the rest of the ingredients and bottled in traditional clay bottles. These clay bottles play a crucial role, as the interaction between the ingredients and the natural material of the bottle continues to develop the balsam's flavor for the first six months after bottling.

Over its storied history, Riga Black Balsam has garnered more than 100 international awards, affirming its esteemed place in global liquor markets. The Latvijas Balzams Shop not only offers a taste of Latvian heritage through its exclusive selection of liquors but also provides a window into the rich cultural and historical tapestry of Latvia.
