LDS Conference Center, Salt Lake City
The LDS Conference Center in Salt Lake City serves as the main gathering place for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), hosting the Church’s semiannual general conferences. Completed in 2000, this impressive 1.4 million-square-foot building seats 21,200 people in its main auditorium, making it one of the largest of its kind globally. It even boasts enough space to accommodate a Boeing 747 between the seating area and the stage.
The auditorium’s unique engineering design includes radial trusses and cantilevered balconies, allowing every seat an unobstructed view of the pulpit. Behind the pulpit, a majestic Schoenstein pipe organ with over 7,000 pipes, including some of the largest in the world, stands as a centerpiece. This venue also accommodates the renowned 360-member Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, which performs at general conferences and other events.
Designed by the architectural firm Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership, the Conference Center's construction was managed by three Salt Lake City firms operating jointly as Legacy Constructors. Building materials include granite sourced from the same deposits as the Salt Lake Temple, enhancing its symbolic link to LDS heritage.
The center features a rooftop garden spanning three acres, planted with native Utah grasses, trees, and foliage to conserve water while mirroring the state’s natural landscape. Guided tours allow visitors to experience panoramic views of Salt Lake City, Temple Square, and the Wasatch Mountains.
In addition to conference events, the center hosts Music & the Spoken Word broadcasts, seasonal concerts, and cultural events like the Luz de las Naciones performance. An attached theater seats 850 and hosts Church productions like Savior of the World, offering Broadway-level lighting and acoustics.
