Leeds Conservatoire, Leeds
Leeds Conservatoire, nestled in the vibrant Quarry Hill district of Leeds, has been a cornerstone of music education and cultural enrichment since its founding in 1965 by Joseph Stones. Originally established as The Leeds Music Centre, it later became known as the City of Leeds College of Music before adopting its current name.
The Conservatoire offers a broad range of educational programs, including full-time courses and shorter programs for both adults and school-age musicians. It is particularly notable for its comprehensive seasonal concert program, hosted primarily in its 350-seat auditorium known as 'The Venue'.
In 2011, Leeds Conservatoire was honored with the All-Steinway School status, distinguishing it as the only conservatoire in England where 90% of the pianos are from the esteemed Steinway family. This accolade underscores its commitment to providing students with top-tier musical instruments.
The institution has significantly evolved, originally housed in the Leeds Institute building near Millennium Square before relocating in 1997 to Quarry Hill, near notable neighbors like Leeds Playhouse and Northern Ballet. It became a subsidiary of Leeds City College in 2011, part of Luminate Education Group, and was recognized again as a Higher Education Institution in 2018.
Leeds Conservatoire has significantly upgraded its facilities, including a refurbishment in 2012 that enhanced its recording studios, performance spaces, and communal areas, and added raked seating in The Venue. Recent expansions also include a rooftop extension to The Venue in 2017 and the introduction of the Leeds Music Library, further improving the learning environment with top-tier practice and study areas.
In 2020, the conservatoire rebranded from Leeds College of Music to Leeds Conservatoire, coinciding with the introduction of new degree courses in Musical Theatre, Acting, and Actor Musician, marking a new era of inclusive and diverse educational offerings. This change reflects its evolving role in the arts education landscape, solidifying its status as a leading institution in music and performing arts education.

Leeds Introduction Walking Tour
The old Brythonic word "Ladenses" meant "folks of the rapid river." The river was the River Aire that flows through the City of Leeds today. In the 5th century the once forested area of Leeds was part of the Brythonic kingdom of Elmet. The Venerable Bede called it "Loidis." In Welsh it was "lloed", "a place." At any rate, "Leeds."
