Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul
Modern art meets tradition and East meets West at the Leeum. The museum is split into two sections, one for Korean traditional art and antiquities, and the other for modern art by both Korean and international artists. The former houses 36 pieces designated as national treasures – which include ancient daggers, porcelain pieces, folk paintings, and manuscripts – while the latter features larger and full-room installations and more recognizable names – Andy Warhol, Rothko, Damien Hirst...
In addition to its pieces, the Leeum is known for its architecture and design. The museum's three main buildings were designed by renowned architects Mario Botta, Jean Nouvel, and Rem Koolhaas (respectively) and give the complex a distinct and unique appearance. The museum's rotunda is also an impressive sight as are the two colossal spider statues outside ("Maman" by Louise Bourgeois). Additionally, the complex contains the Samsung Child Education & Culture Center, an interactive museum for children.
Tip:
The best part of the learning journey is the excellent digital guide, which automatically plays files that correspond with the artwork you are standing in front of. It is freely offered in Korean, English, Chinese, and Japanese.
